Student Progress

One factor that affects the academic achievement of the child and ability to learn is the behavior. In my 20 hours observation, I noticed that my cooperating teacher focuses more on the behavior of the child first before discussing the lesson or activity. Before, I observed that there are two to three students that are displaying disruptive behavior which affects the other students inside the classroom. Some are still not mastered the routines given and the other are out-of-focus and not paying attention. But later on I’ve noticed that there is a small progress in terms behavior and academic performance. For example, when the students enter the room they already know what to do and the students who are not participating in discussion before are now answering when the teacher is  asking them. Those little progress are very important for a Special Education teacher because that is the most rewarding part for them, to see students with special needs in the right program for their needs.

Managing Classroom

There are some teachers who think that classroom management is all about discipline where they have to control the students to be quiet. One of the strategies of Harry Wong is the greeting of students when they enter the room which sets up a positive relationship between the teacher and student. As teacher we must establish routines and procedures in order to have a well-managed classroom. Teaching these to our students will take 1 week or it depends on the type of students we have and these should be consistent. When the routines and procedures are being applied, the teacher’s energy will stay focus on teaching rather than disciplining the students.

Teacher as a Model of Values

Teachers are the role model inside and outside the classroom because they are the one who inspires and encourage every student to strive hard and see the best in their selves. Some of the values that I’ve observed from my cooperating teacher is having a sense of hope for his students. He believes that students have different learning styles and there is a possibility that these students will progress in their academics and in their life. Another is, he is being fair to his students which mean that he accommodates all the needs of his students and not just focusing on one student. As teachers, we are the one who is responsible in teaching morality to our students because if morality is applied to their education this will not just benefit them but the whole society as well.

Promoting child's right in Angeles Elementary School

We can promote child’s right by putting their interest first and making them involve in decision making which affect them, and also involving the parents and other people who are connected to the child. During my observation, my cooperating teacher provides support to his students in order for them to reach their full potential. Another is he is also teaching them skills that they need in their adult life. He also allows his students to meet their needs if necessary like going to the comfort room, drink water, etc. As teachers, we must let our students feel comfortable inside our classroom and make sure that their rights are being met because through this the child will be able to gain the opportunity to experience learning with enjoyment.

Angeles Elementary School as a System

Angeles Elementary School has its own laws, policies, and regulations that are followed by the teachers, students, parents, and other school personnel. For us observers, the rules and regulations that we need to follow are mentioned in my other blog entitled “Orientation”. In terms of facilities, the room where I observe has teaching resources, books for the students, computer, and other learning materials which the teacher and students use to make their daily lesson interactive. I also saw that there is collaboration between the teachers and parents. The role of education system is very important because it is the one who build brighter future to our students.

Teaching Philosophy

Having a philosophy of teaching will help a teacher to understand the actual process of learning as well as on how to be effective which is more than telling the students to study. According to my cooperating teacher, the greatest enemy in teaching students with autism is their behavior because we cannot input knowledge if our students are misbehaving. Seemingly, his teaching philosophy is more on behaviorism because he make sure that the arrangement of furniture are well arranged and he is also using visual aids in order to get desired responses from his learners. As teachers, having a teaching philosophy will help us to stay focus on our goal and measure our own effectiveness.

O R I E N T A T I O N

AUGUST 01, 2018

The School Principal gave us a short orientation first before we proceed in our deployment. During the orientation, the Principal discussed the rules and regulations inside the school which is the Angeles Elementary School. As observers, we should be punctual or come five or ten minutes before the given observation time. Next is wearing of appropriate attire which is the HAU school uniform with ID. Another one is the using of cellphone which is not allowed, of course we come to school to observe not to do unnecessary stuff. Lastly, is the checking of our DTR’s. She also mentioned the things that they expect from us. As observers, we should help our cooperating teacher voluntarily. If we see that the teacher needs help we must immediately help them, we are not visitors in their class. Since this is my first time to observe in this school, I felt a little bit nervous and at the same time excited
because of the new environment, and new people who are very nice and accommodating.
